Fiber-Span, the established leader in fiber-optic RF ON FIBER® products, today announced their selection to provide an upgrade for the Enhanced Digital Access Communications System (EDACS)® simulcast radio coverage in the Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH) tunnels, stations, and in-building areas. The communications system, critical for public safety needs, will cover the fourteen miles of PATH train tunnels spanning from Newark, New Jersey to the World Trade Center and 34th Street Manhattan stations. Its implementation will greatly enhance 800 MHz Radio Communications utilized by both the Port Authority Police Department and Port Authority maintenance personnel, meeting the latest public safety coverage requirements set by the Federal Government.
Seamless RF coverage for the PATH tunnels and PATH’s thirteen stations will be accomplished by connecting a new Distributed Antenna System (DAS) to the existing M/A-COM EDACS® system via Fiber Optic Repeaters. The solution will feature the use of digitally enhanced delays to provide Simulcast performance, reducing the interference incurred due to multiple signals. Reception of multiple signals has plagued the in building wireless market for years. Two additional systems will provide enhanced in-building coverage at the Journal Square Transportation Center (JSTC) and Newark Penn Station by utilizing Fiber-Span channelized Bi-Directional Amplifiers (BDAs). Fiber-Span’s solution features equipment and fiber optic path redundancy by switching between primary and secondary fiber runs and is designed to meet the special challenges of “non-interference” with above ground systems.
According to Hal Halpern, Fiber-Span’s CEO, “Fiber-Span’s proprietary Course and Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM, DWDM) technology allows for the implementation of a robust, reliable and cost-effective system architecture ideally suited for tunnel applications. A comprehensive Network Management System for Alarming and Monitoring is incorporated to ensure reliability and for up-to-the-minute maintenance of the system, whose service lines travel underneath the Hudson River. Fiber-Span is confident that our RF ON FIBER solution will provide the reliable, high performance 800 MHz radio system the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey requires.”
