Fiber-Span was recently awarded a contract by a tier 1 carrier in Buenos Aries, Argentina to extend commercial services into a subway. Fiber-Span engineered a solution and assisted in the implementation of a fiber based distribution system that utilized DWDM technology to extend RF coverage to 15 subway stations spanning over 10 kilometers.

Fiber-Span’s medium-power (4Watt) DWDM Remote fiber optic Repeaters Units (RRU) provided the bi-directional amplification, filtering, and RF-to-Optic conversion at each subway platform. Each RRU provides RF coverage to the Platform and vestibules areas as well as reliable coverage to tunnel segments between platforms.

The objective was to minimize the number of leased fiber strands while meeting the coverage requirements. Fiber-Span’s solution required only 2 strands of fiber in an add/drop configuration to allow each RRU to communicate with carrier BTS equipment. The DWDM solution exceeded the carrier’s coverage requirements and resulted in considerable savings to the carrier by minimizing the number of leased fibers.

By completing phase I on time and exceeding customer requirements, Fiber-Span was awarded Phase II which consisted of providing wireless coverage to the additional subterranean tunnels A, C & E. Phase I project commenced in October 2007 and both phases were completed by May 2008.
