New Jersey Transit selects Fiber-Span for Advanced Wireless Communications System

May 19, 2008

Fiber-Span announces that they have been selected by New Jersey Transit to provide systems engineering and products for the Newark City Subway (NCS) advanced wireless communications system in Newark, New Jersey. Fiber-Span, RF on Fiber experts for over 15 years, is the world leading manufacturer of RF on Fiber communications network products for in-building, in-tunnel, and outdoor coverage extension systems.

New Jersey Transit (NJT) operates its Light Rail Vehicles (LRV) in the Newark subway system, covering six miles of track and serving over thirteen million passengers annually. Over two of the six miles of track are in underground tunnels. Underground tunnels present wireless problems since they prevent the transmissions of the outdoor communications required on board the LRVs and on the five tunnel platforms. The termination of NCS is at Pennsylvania Station, the hub for the PATH, Amtrak and NJT trains. Wireless coverage of all of these platforms, tunnels and LRVs provides a major technical challenge; Fiber-Span provides the answer and the solution.

According to Hal Halpern, Fiber-Span CEO “We appreciate the trust that NJT has placed in us and we look forward to providing them with a state-of-the art system. More and more municipalities are recognizing the need for emergency wireless systems in hard to reach areas; this is the strength of Fiber-Span.”

Fiber-Span (FS) wireless experts provided a detailed technical proposal which demonstrated the use of RF on Fiber along with channelized booster amplifiers as the technical solution to the complex requirements of NJT. NJT’s requirements included the expansion of the wireless channels from 8 to 37 channels. Within this 37 channel array were a new band of channels covering the 450 to 470 MHz band. These bands utilize full duplex and simplex protocols making the final system solution unique. The new systems supported by the Fiber-Span designs will be: Nine VHF channels (151 to 161 MHz); Ten UHF channels (454 to 473 MHz); Eighteen 800 MHz (809 to 869 MHz).

Fiber-Span will apply years of system design in confined locations along with FCC approved product lines to the project, scheduled for 2008 completion. This contract demonstrates the total package that the FS team provides to complex wireless systems like the NCS. Bringing their expertise in fiber optics, wireless and systems solutions to the NCS will provide another major location with the FS total solution. FS’s staff has pioneered a resolution to the time delay interference (TDI) dilemma which occurs with the incidence of outside and inside communications. FS now applies these engineering techniques to solve the TDI problem at NCS. TDI is an obstacle which has plagued and delayed major projects in NYC for years.

NJT project goals are to supply a turn-key modern solution for all the bands required by NCS. Once these bands are operational, the NCS will provide the interoperability required by the Department of Homeland Security. Fiber-Span serves commercial, wireless, public safety, government and military markets.
