Fiber-Span Announces Delivery of Fiber Optic Repeater System for Public Safety 2 Way Radio in Taiwan Railway Tunnels

products, announced today that it has completed its delivery of Fiber Optic Radio Repeater systems to be used by Taiwan Railroad Authority for a critical public safety communications system. The Fiber Optic Repeater system distributes Radio capacity from Motorola TETRA (TErrestrial Trunked RAdio) base stations to more than 60 tunnels over a distance greater than 160 kilometers in a railway system. To the company’s knowledge, this represents the largest Tetra fiber optic repeater installation in the world.
Due to high loss in coax cabling, engineers have difficulty in locating antennas in remote locations. Fiber-Span has developed an optical repeater system to overcome this difficulty in transporting RF signals. The system is easy to install and extremely cost effective in extending radio coverage to dead zones.
Fiber-Span engineers worked closely with Motorola to interface the base stations for seamless integration. The system operates in the UHF band. The repeaters convert the UHF signal to an optical signal using Fiber-Span’s RF ON FIBER® modules and distribute them over single-mode fiber. Radio signals are directly tapped from a base station and are split and delivered to front end Fiber Optic Transceivers (FTU) using a base station tap (BSU) interface. The FTU is connected the Optical Remote Transceivers (ORU) via fiber optic cables into the tunnel areas. The ORU Fiber Optic Transceivers are connected to radiating coaxial cable along the length of the tunnels to provide continuous radio coverage.
The system was engineered to deliver reliable radio communications inside as well as outside the tunnels and in-building.
