Fiber Span was selected by local 2-Way Radio Dealer /Systems Integrator Dailey Wells as the equipment solutions partner for a turn-key Public Safety Distributed Antenna System (DAS) at University Health System in San Antonio, TX.

Fiber Span designed the DAS to cover 800MHz frequencies for the University Health System police at University Hospital, the lead Level I Trauma Center for South Texas. The thick concrete walls throughout the twelve story hospital created a very unfriendly RF environment which prompted the request for a Public Safety DAS from Fiber-Span. University Health System required a cost-effective solution that would allow critical communications throughout all areas of their hospital, not just the public, high traffic areas typically associated with a commercial carrier DAS covering cellular /PCS services.

Fiber Span used an efficient DAS design lowering the number of active components and overall cost of the system. The Applications Engineering Team at Fiber Span designed a hybrid fiber DAS using an Integrated Headend Unit (IHU), an off-the-air Bi-Directional Amplifier (BDA) product which includes a coaxial output port as well as in integrated headend fiber-optic transceiver unit. The top floors of the hospital were covered by a coaxial DAS system connected to the IHU, and the remaining floors were covered by a Remote Repeater Unit (RRU) connected to the IHU via existing single-mode fiber. The hybrid DAS covered all 12 floors and the basement. 

The DAS is also fully expandable to allow for future growth. University Health System is currently under construction, expanding its hospital campus, and will ultimately require additional coverage in the new areas, offering continuous coverage for First Responder emergency radio communications.
